Michelle A. Rivas is an award-winning Latina health blogger, aspiring health communication researcher and health and wellness aficionado. She received the Latina 30 Under 30 People's Choice award in 2014 and graduated from DePaul University earning a master's degree in Health Communication in 2015. Previously, she attended Arizona State's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication earning a bachelor's degree in Journalism and Mass Communication and a minor in Exercise and Wellness through the College of Health Solutions.
Rivas is passionate about increasing the availability of culturally competent healthcare in the United States and hopes to use her Spanish and American Sign Language skills to conduct health communication research studies in underserved communities.
She offers public relations expertise, corporate health and wellness experience, as well as internal and external benefits communication experience. She currently works as a manager at a public relations firm in the health practice working on a wealth of national and local health clients. She has public relations experience at a global public relations firm and internship experience at Arizona Public Service as a health and wellness intern planning and promoting their corporate wellness program. She has also served past internships with the Phoenix Symphony as a marketing and public relations intern and worked with the Phoenix Suns through their marketing partnerships.
Rivas authors an award-winning health and wellness blog aimed at providing accurate and culturally-directed health information for Latinas. She also works as a freelance writer on health and nutrition topics and has been published by the American Heart Association, NewLatina.net and Latina magazine.
In the future, Rivas plans to complete her PhD in Health Communication and conduct various health communication research studies. She hopes to pioneer culturally competent health communication practices for health care professionals.
